This first release of our Malbec has complex aromatics that remind me of Christmas dinner at grandmas house. There are wonderful scents that come together to create a complete memory. From the Berry pie cooking in the over to the slowly roasting meats in the oven, this wine has all the flavors, seasonings and spices. The palate however is light and bright more focused on stewed fruits and cloves, but bringing in elements of mincemeat. It’s quite delightful with a bright finish and a slight roasted coffee quality to the tannin. This is a very food friendly wine which pairs well with grilled steaks, fried chicken, and our favorite hamburgers. Drink now through 2033.
The Pocai Vineyard has been continuously farmed by our family for over 100 years, ever since Betty Ballentine’s grandfather purchased it in 1906. Purchased with a pile of gold coins, Pocai Vineyard is the heart and soul of the Ballentine Family Estate. Located on the southern edge of the Calistoga Appellation. The soil is Bale gravelly loam, the rockiest soil of our three vineyards, the fertility of the soil is low, but the drainage is excellent and is perfect for growing powerful red grapes.
Our second vintage of the newly planted Malbec from the Pocai Vineyard gave us enough volume to use as a blender and also bottle some on its own. Our first vintage from this vineyard, the previous year, found its way into almost every wine as a blending. It was such a lovable expression of Malbec, that it brought life and complexity to almost everything it came in touch with. We blended it all away that first vintage, but with this second vintage wanted to show what a special and rare wine this was to our members.
