2014 Sauvignon Blanc
St. Helena-Napa Valley
August 11, 2014
2 months in 25% New French Oak 75% Stainless Steel Ageing
Our Sauvignon Blanc is planted at the base of Howell Mountain in the Northeastern corner of the St. Helena Appellation. The Musque clone gives us a more floral expression of Sauvignon Blanc. The first of our grapes to pick this vintage, the fruit came in looking like perfection.
This wine is made with white grapes, but produced like a traditional red wine, leaving the juice in contact with the skins. We opened a slightly used French oak barrel by taking its head off, and filled it with berries. The wine was fermented in the barrel and left on the skins for a period of two months. Aged for a year in this same barrel and stirred sur lies, this wine pushes the limits of our comfort zone. What came out is an incredibly mineral and textured expression of the variety.
The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc XP explores flavors we don’t play with very much. The wine style focuses on minerality, orange zest, honeysuckle, lavender spice, and vanilla. Two weeks of skin contact gives the wine a rich texture with velvety structure, which is very unusual for Sauvignon Blanc. Silky smooth and layered with stone fruit flavor and pear spice.
