2003 Zinfandel Block 9 Reserve
By the Case Only - $180/Case
Aged 17 months in Oak; 35% New American & 10% New French oak
The color is a vibrant rose petal reddish blue, and the aromas start with fresh dark red fruits blueberry and boysenberry then reveal a more complex floral and spice notes like sage and lemon balm. The influence of French and American oak sneak through hinting with aromas vanilla and crème brulee. The palate resonates what was found in the aromatics, and the finish has a lingering interplay of cherries, spice, and blueberry. The texture is silky, and the wine has incredible length to the finish
The Bale Gravelly Loam soil on this site limits the vines yield, producing fruit with excellent concentration and structure. It is considered one of the finest in the Napa Valley for growing high quality wine grapes. Moreover, it has rather limited distribution, occurring primarily on the alluvial fans at the base of ridges that delineate our valley. The Ballentine family has cultivated their vineyard site since 1906 and are proud to present wines such as these that reflect a prized Napa Valley location.
The warmer 2003 was a vintage for maximum maturity leading to wines of this type having a dark red fruit expression and full body. We approach this wine by keeping a greater amount of whole berries to retain complex fruit in the finished wine. We also choose to aggressively pump over the wine during it’s peak fermentation, adding air to the pump overs, and controlling the heat of the fermentation. We pressed off sweet and allowed to finish fermentation in the barrel, with the goal of harnessing as much of the fermentation esters as possible.
