2015 Cabernet Franc
Gold, San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
22 months in Oak, 50% New, 75% French
The 2015 Cabernet Franc has the best concentration we’ve seen in years. The nose is brimming with blueberry and raspberry jam. There is a scent reminiscent of maple syrup and vanilla covered berries giving the wine an intense aromatic play. The palate is full and rich with some tannin in the mid palate giving the wine some good weight. There are cherries and berries along with toast and caramel flavors. The finish mellows and the wine is smooth at the end. Flavors of raspberry and black cherry linger on the tongue for a long time.
These vines are planted on our rockiest vineyard location off of Maple Lane. The Pocai Vineyard is in one of the warmest locations in the Napa Valley, and it is ideal for ripening Cabernet Franc. Spring was very early once again in 2015, and the early bloom and consistent, good grape-growing weather producing an excellent grape crop. This Cabernet Franc shows its heritage and place with its deep color and concentrated body.
The Cabernet Franc are classically the last grapes we bring into the winery for the season. The tannins are mature and the flavors well-developed by the time we pick our Cabernet Franc. We use a rhone yeast selection to help highlight the floral and red fruit aspects of this wine. Aged in 50% new oak, the wine is given ample time for the tannins to combine and the palate to gain weight and structure. A combination of French and American oak are used to accent the spiciness of the wine and build middle palate structure.
